The Daily Dig
Parkland Medical Center, part of HCA Healthcare, has broken ground on a $16 million freestanding emergency room in Salem, New Hampshire. Salem ER is scheduled to open in summer 2027 at 53 South Broadway, near Interstate 93 and across from Tuscan Village.
Parkland leadership and trustees marked the start with Salem town officials, local elected officials, EMS agencies and Consigli Construction.
Drive Time
Once open, the facility is expected to put emergency care within 15 minutes by car for about 30,000 residents who don’t have that access today. Salem ER will run around the clock and offer the same types of services as a hospital emergency department.
“An emergency is stressful enough without a long trip to reach care,” said Whitney Fenyak, chief executive officer of Parkland Medical Center.
Twelve Rooms and a Trauma Bay
The building will hold 12 private patient rooms, including a fully equipped trauma bay. It will also house CT scanning, diagnostic X-rays and an onsite lab.
Patients will have a walk-in entrance, and ambulances will have a covered entrance of their own.
Treatment begins onsite, and patients who need hospitalization will be transferred to an appropriate hospital.
“A shorter trip to a freestanding emergency room can help people get evaluated more promptly when time matters,” said Dr. Devin Keefe, medical director of emergency medicine at Parkland Medical Center.
Part of a Bigger Pour
Salem ER is one of four projects in HCA Healthcare’s $50.5 million investment in New Hampshire emergency care. The others are Nashua ER, Capital Region ER in Concord, and an expansion and renovation of the emergency department at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester.

TheJobWalk Thoughts
Don’t let the $16 million price tag fool anyone. CT and X-ray rooms typically need shielding, structural support and dedicated power, and those details depend on the equipment the owner selects. Lock that information in early, or count on layout changes after the walls close in.
The bigger signal is HCA’s pattern. Four emergency care projects in one state show an owner investing across New Hampshire, not in a single site. Subs and suppliers who deliver cleanly here build a track record with an owner whose emergency care work spans four projects in the state.
