Austin Community College District (ACC) broke ground Tuesday, September 22, on a new Healthcare Professions Building at its Hays Campus in Kyle, Texas. Kitchell Contractors is the contractor, and HarrisonKornberg Architects is the architect.
The project is funded through ACC's 2022 General Obligation Bond. As of August, ACC said it remained on schedule to open for the fall 2028 semester.
Sizing Up the Build:
Estimated construction cost for Building 5000: $101 million, per a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing reported by project tracker Zabalist. ACC lists the total budget as "to be determined."
Size: 136,300 square feet across three stories, per the same filing
Capacity: 900 to 1,000 students at full capacity
More Than a Building: The project also includes a new Central Utility Plant, a redesigned driveway, expanded parking, and enhanced landscaping.
The building will house nursing, dental hygiene, sonography, surgical technology, radiological technology, and other healthcare programs, with dedicated simulation and lab spaces. ACC Chancellor Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart said Hays will help the college double its healthcare programs.
Pause, Then Proceed: Kitchell was selected in July 2023. That fall, ACC paused most campus construction when Lowery-Hart became chancellor, to evaluate shifts in local workforce demand and student needs.
ACC announced in November 2024 that bond work at Hays was resuming. This August, it reported that the design team had extended its schedule to work in cost savings without sacrificing quality.
Bid Watch: In that same update, ACC said final drawings were expected by the end of August, after which the general contractor would begin the first round of subcontractor bid solicitations.
