Skanska signed a $113 million contract with the District Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration to rehabilitate the I-395 Northbound Bridge over the Potomac River. The span connects Arlington, Virginia to Washington, D.C.
The deal is worth about SEK 1.1 billion and lands in Skanska's US order bookings for the third quarter of 2026.
Bascule No More:
The bridge currently runs on a double-leaf bascule design, meaning both halves lift open to let boat traffic pass. It spans roughly 175 feet across the shipping channel.
Skanska's job is to convert it into a fixed span, so it will no longer open at all. The scope also covers:
Replacing the vessel protection system at the bascule piers
Swapping out the bridge barrier
Rehabbing the superstructure and substructure on the approach spans
The Build:
Work is already underway. Skanska expects to finish in the third quarter of 2029, a three-year rebuild that swaps a bridge with moving parts for one that just sits there and does its job.
A drawbridge that never has to stop traffic for a boat again. Somewhere, a very patient commuter is taking notes.
