The Daily Dig
BorgWarner Inc. is expanding its existing Hendersonville, North Carolina facility with a $100 million investment that will bring 378 new jobs to Henderson County. The company plans to add 140,000 square feet to its current site, vertically integrating its operations to produce critical components that support its business growth.
New positions will span production staff, logistics personnel, and technicians. The average annual salary is expected to hit $67,047, clearing the Henderson County average of $54,118 by nearly $13,000. Those jobs carry a projected annual payroll impact of more than $25.3 million for the region.
The expansion is supported in part by a Job Development Investment Grant awarded to BorgWarner Industrial Solutions LLC. The 12-year grant authorizes up to $3,685,500 in potential reimbursements, tied to annual performance verification on job creation and capital investment targets. The project is projected to generate $1 billion in state economic growth over the grant term, with the state receiving $1.88 in revenue for every dollar of potential cost.
Because the project is located in a Tier 2 county, up to $409,500 will move into North Carolina's Industrial Development Fund Utility Account, which finances infrastructure upgrades for rural communities across the state.
BorgWarner operates 81 facilities globally with a workforce of 37,500 and has been developing mobility solutions for major automotive OEMs for more than a century.

TheJobWalk Thoughts
Vertical integration projects are not always one-and-done builds. When a manufacturer brings component production in-house, it often means phased buildouts, equipment installations, and facility modifications as production lines come online. Subcontractors who get established on this project early may be positioning themselves for work that runs well beyond the initial construction phase.
JDIG grants are performance-based, meaning BorgWarner only receives reimbursement after hitting its annual job creation and investment targets. That structure gives the company strong financial incentive to keep the project moving. Contractors should be aware that performance-based incentives of this kind can create real pressure around timing and delivery.
The state's Division of Workforce Solutions, the NC Community College System, and Blue Ridge Community College are all named partners in this expansion. That level of institutional involvement suggests hiring and training are expected to ramp quickly once the facility is operational. For suppliers and subcontractors in the region, a facility staffing up fast is one that will need materials, maintenance contracts, and operational support sooner rather than later.
