The Daily Dig

Cambrex has broken ground on a $120 million expansion at their Charles City, Iowa facility. The project adds 160,000 liters of capacity for the development and commercial manufacturing of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and synthetic peptides.

Completion is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2028. Once it’s finished, the company says the site’s total capacity will reach nearly one million liters.

The plant already makes small molecule APIs, synthetic peptides, and pharmaceutical intermediates. Their work runs from clinical development through production at commercial scale.

Rather than starting from scratch, the expansion builds on the site’s existing infrastructure.

Centennial Groundwork

Cambrex held the groundbreaking ceremony on October 29, 2026. Company leaders, employees, state and local officials, and members of the Charles City community were there for it.

The site is also celebrating its 100th anniversary, which makes adding capacity a fitting way to open its second century.

Claudio Russolo, Cambrex’s Chief Operating Officer and incoming Chief Executive Officer, tied the project to customer growth: “By expanding commercial-scale capacity for both small molecule and peptide manufacturing, we are strengthening our ability to support customers as their programs advance from development through commercialization.”

TheJobWalk Thoughts

The expansion builds on existing infrastructure at an active plant, so tie-ins to current systems are likely. Work like that often has to be sequenced around ongoing production. Mechanical and piping crews who know how to work around live operations will beat a low number.

The fourth quarter of 2028 also isn’t as far off as it sounds. Pharma process equipment carries long lead times, and commissioning and validation usually take up the back end of the schedule. The announcement doesn’t name a general contractor, so suppliers and specialty subs should be making introductions now.
