UpCodes says its AI Plan Review has checked more than 1,300 construction plan sets since launching in June, flagging more than 180,000 potential issues. Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, BDG Architects and Hereford Dooley Architects are among the newest adopters.
What the Robot Redlined
Per the company’s own data, each plan set averaged 21 critical issues.
Missing exit signage was the most common critical finding
Nearly half (46%) of critical issues involved life safety: means of egress, fire protection and fire-resistance-rated construction
Roughly one in ten critical issues were coordination conflicts between disciplines, the kind that usually surface late and drive costly rework
So the most common critical miss was the sign that shows people the way out.
Cheaper on Paper
According to UpCodes, an egress problem caught on a drawing may require a simple design change. Found during construction, it could mean relocating a door, changing a corridor or reworking conditions already built.
The company also estimates more than $1 million in potential construction error costs per project, on average. Read it as a projection, not an invoice.
Still Needs a Stamp
Plan Review is a first pass. It doesn’t replace a licensed design professional or approval from the authority having jurisdiction.
The humans still sign off. The AI just gets an early look.
