Caterpillar is partnering with robotics company FieldAI to build out physical AI and autonomy across jobsites and manufacturing facilities. The goal is safer, more productive operations at a time when labor shortages keep squeezing the industry.

The idea is simple even if the technology isn't. Pair more than a century of Caterpillar's equipment and operations knowledge with FieldAI's robot foundation models. Then let that combination operate autonomously in complex, dynamic industrial environments where traditional automation often falls short.

Foundation Models, Foreman-Approved

FieldAI isn't new to complicated jobsites. The company has deployed across hundreds of sites worldwide. Caterpillar picked them specifically for that track record in environments most automation struggles to handle.

Four early use cases are on the table. Autonomous inspections. Jobsite and facility digital twins. Sharper situational awareness for catching risks sooner. Operational optimization through simulation and AI-driven insights.

Caterpillar CTO Jaime Mineart framed it as combining human expertise with AI-powered machines. The collaboration, he said, is "focused on applying AI where it matters most, helping customers improve safety, increase productivity and get more value from every operation."

The push connects to Caterpillar's "jobsite of the future" vision, which the company shared at CES earlier in 2026.

The collaboration isn't just for the field. Caterpillar SVP John Tuntland said the tools are already changing how the company runs its own manufacturing operations, giving teams "greater visibility into how our facilities operate" and helping them "optimize flow and make more informed decisions."

Under the hood, the effort leans on NVIDIA accelerated computing and NVIDIA Omniverse, with high-fidelity digital twins built from real operational data.
