The Daily Dig

Construction Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD) has acquired Ellsworth Construction, LLC, an asphalt manufacturing and construction firm based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The deal gives CPI a hot-mix asphalt plant in Broken Arrow. It also adds a permitted asphalt plant site in Greater Oklahoma City. Ellsworth handles paving, sitework and utility work for public and private clients across both metro areas.

The acquired business will operate as a branded division under Overland Corporation, CPI's existing Oklahoma platform company. Nathan Ellsworth will continue leading the business in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City markets. CPI President and CEO Fred J. (Jule) Smith, III credited Ellsworth's market knowledge, customer relationships and operational track record as reasons the arrangement made sense.

Data center work is a key piece of the deal. Ellsworth is a leader in the growing data center construction market across Tulsa and Oklahoma City. CPI says that work complements Overland's existing data center project portfolio in north Texas.

Smith also pointed to Tulsa and Oklahoma City as the two fastest growing metro areas in the state. He framed the acquisition as a way to build upon Overland's success in Oklahoma.

TheJobWalk Thoughts

CPI now has data center related construction capabilities in Tulsa, Oklahoma City and north Texas under one ownership group. That footprint gives Overland a stronger position to chase data center scope across three markets instead of building relationships in each one separately.

Keeping Nathan Ellsworth in place preserves the local relationships and reputation that made this business worth buying in the first place, rather than starting from scratch under new leadership.

GCs and subs bidding public or private work in Tulsa and Oklahoma City should note that CPI now controls an operating asphalt plant in Broken Arrow, plus a permitted site in Oklahoma City for future capacity.
