EMJ Construction just promoted Alex Miller to President of the company, putting him in charge of the Chattanooga-based general contractor's national growth and day-to-day execution, according to the company's Aug. 19 announcement.
Miller's not new to the building. He's a longtime EMJ leader stepping into EMJ's top job, and the timing lines up with parent company BLDR Holdings reshuffling its portfolio to give each of its construction brands a clearer lane.
The Lane Change
That reshuffle is the real backdrop here. BLDR is developing TEXBUILT, a new outfit built to chase opportunities specifically in Texas, while EMJ keeps its nationwide client base. Think of it less as a rivalry and more as BLDR splitting the map: EMJ plays the whole board, TEXBUILT plants a flag in one state and digs in.
"This structure is about sharpening our focus and positioning our companies to pursue the opportunities where they are best equipped to serve," said Jack Bowen, CEO of BLDR Holdings.
Miller isn't rebuilding EMJ's leadership bench, he's keeping it intact. He'll work alongside:
Chris Grannan and Joey Barbeauld, who run preconstruction and construction operations
Lance Gopffarth, who leads the Phoenix office
EMJ itself is employee-owned, which means Miller's promotion isn't just a corporate reshuffle. It's a stake in the ground from people who actually own the dirt they're building on.
Worth Watching
TEXBUILT is still in development, so the real test comes once it's fully staffed and running, and BLDR finds out whether splitting the map actually grows the pie or just draws new lines on it.
