The FAA is putting $481 million into airport infrastructure through 191 grants across 36 states and 2 territories. The timing lines up with a Labor Day travel weekend that puts real strain on runways, taxiways and terminals nationwide.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is getting the largest single award in this round. The airport will receive $100 million for runway and taxiway reconstruction, terminal work and runway safety area improvements. That kind of safety area work matters. It's the buffer that keeps a bad landing from becoming a bad day.
Terminal Timeout
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky is reconstructing its terminal with $32.5 million in federal funding. San Diego International Airport picked up $30.3 million for its own terminal construction project.
Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport in Wisconsin is getting $14.2 million for taxiway construction and rehabilitation. El Paso International Airport in Texas received $8.7 million to rehabilitate its apron.
General aviation airports across Wisconsin will split $2.5 million for terminal reconstruction, runway and taxiway rehabilitation, and snow removal equipment building reconstruction. The smaller fields made the list too.
The money flows through the FAA's Airport Infrastructure Grants program. It covers planning, terminal improvements, baggage systems, runway and taxiway rehab, access roads and safety infrastructure. "We're investing in airport infrastructure that keeps travelers safe and airports operating efficiently," said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.

An AIG award doesn't tell you where a project actually sits in its lifecycle. Some of these grants are funding work that's still years out. Others are funding projects already deep into design or ready to bid. Aviation-experienced GCs and subs should be watching each airport's own capital program, not just this announcement, to know when the real procurement window opens.
Atlanta's $100 million covers runway, taxiway and terminal work in one award. That's a lot of scope under one number, and how it gets packaged into actual contracts is worth watching closely once bid documents start showing up.
Airside construction comes with real barriers. Crews need to work around active runways without disrupting operations, and federal contracting brings its own bonding, security and airfield safety requirements on top of the usual project demands. That's not a market you walk into cold, and it's exactly why contractors with airport experience already on their resume are the ones best positioned to chase this wave of funding.
