Digital Realty is developing a new subsea cable landing station (CLS) at its LAX12 data center in Los Angeles. Assured Communications is supporting design, engineering and construction, and the station is expected to begin supporting cables in 2028.
Shore Thing: The company announced the project on Sept. 22. According to the release, the CLS is expected to strengthen connectivity across Digital Realty's LA footprint by bringing subsea and terrestrial networks into closer integration.
It's pitched as a turnkey solution for subsea cable operators, covering:
Landing and powering their systems
Interconnection with terrestrial networks
Colocation within Digital Realty's broader platform
Subsea customers are expected to gain access to the networks, cloud providers, and carriers available across Digital Realty's Los Angeles campus.
Landing Gear: CEO Andy Power said the project brings subsea landing infrastructure together with the company's existing interconnection and data center platform. He said it reflects a continued focus on expanding Digital Realty's role in supporting global connectivity.
Digital Realty's global footprint already spans 300+ facilities in 55+ metros across 30+ countries.
Hard Hats On: Assured Communications specializes in subsea infrastructure design and delivery. Founder and CEO Joel Ogren said his team is excited to help bring the station to Los Angeles to further strengthen connectivity between Asia Pacific and North America.
Circle 2028: The project is currently in development. Once complete, the CLS is expected to give carriers, cloud providers, and content platforms additional routes and greater flexibility for connecting the two regions.
LAX12 already sounds like an airport gate. If the 2028 target holds, it will be ready for something to land.
