The Daily Dig:
Google confirmed it's behind Project Mica and construction is underway on its second data center campus in the Kansas City area. The 500 acre site sits near the northeast corner of I-435 and Highway 169 in the Northland. Google's first local data center, a $1 billion project, broke ground in March 2024 and is still under construction.
Port KC approved up to $10 billion in taxable revenue bonds in July 2025 to help finance the project, along with a 25 year property tax abatement at 75% and full sales tax exemptions on construction materials and equipment. The campus will run on Evergy's Large Load Power Tariff for users with 75 megawatts or higher monthly peak demand, with Google covering all energy costs for both Kansas City sites.

TheJobWalk Thoughts:
Five hundred acres and a 75-megawatt power load means this isn't a building, it's a program. With financing closed, power structured, and a second campus already in the ground, the work that counts is happening right now on civil, utility infrastructure, and long lead electrical and mechanical procurement. If you're in early on site development, you're setting up for scope across both campuses as things roll through the usual 18 to 24 months. The contractors in the room during preconstruction are the ones who'll see the repeat work.
