The Daily Dig:
The City of Tucson has awarded the 22nd Street Widening and Bridge Replacement Project to a Granite-Traylor joint venture, with Granite Construction leading. The $157 million project will rebuild 22nd Street from Kino Parkway to Tucson Boulevard and replace the existing four lane bridge over State Route 210 (Barraza-Aviation Parkway) and the Union Pacific Railroad with a new six lane structure. City materials identify 22nd Street as a designated freight route and a key east-west connection supporting truck and commuter traffic.
Funding for the project includes contributions from the Regional Transportation Authority, the Federal Highway Administration, the City of Tucson, and Pima County, along with previously awarded federal grant support. The Cityās published schedule shows construction beginning in February 2026, with an anticipated duration of roughly 2.5 to 3 years and an estimated completion around November 2028. Granite has also confirmed it will supply 10,525 tons of asphalt from its local Swan Facility.

TheJobWalk Thoughts:
This is a schedule that looks reasonable until boots hit the ground. Rail coordination, freight traffic, and a bridge over SR 210 will test every assumption baked into the plan. The work itself isnāt exotic, but the sequencing will be unforgiving. Miss a window with the railroad or traffic control, and the job starts slipping fast. Crews that stay disciplined on access, staging, and night work will keep this moving.
