The Daily Dig

Gritt announced that it has raised $32.4 million in total funding to date, combining an earlier pre-seed round with a new $26 million Series A. The Series A was led by Obvious Ventures, with Union Square Ventures and Active Impact Investments also joining. Returning backers First Round Capital, Climactic, Congruent Ventures, and VSC Ventures also participated.

The company builds a robotics and AI system for infrastructure construction. Its system attaches robotic arms and AI hardware directly to equipment crews already own, including skid steers and forklifts. That setup lets Gritt pick, place, assemble, and transport materials with millimeter precision as jobsite conditions change. The company says the system gets faster with every deployment, and training that once took months now takes days.

Gritt's machines are already running on active sites for construction companies the company describes as among the top 10 in the U.S., including firms building large-scale solar farms. Gritt reports its robots have placed tens of thousands of solar panels with zero breakages, though that figure is company-reported and not independently verified. The system also captures real-time data on completed work, material movement, and site conditions, and feeds that data back to supervisors.

Gritt points to mounting labor pressure across the trades as the backdrop for its launch. The company cites a figure showing more than 41% of the U.S. construction workforce is expected to retire by 2031, a statistic that traces to a 2018 industry report rather than a fresh 2026 forecast. Gritt also says the industry has seen a 46% decline in productivity, though the company does not specify the timeframe or dataset behind that number. Gritt's founders attribute the gap to outdoor jobsite conditions, including unpredictable terrain, weather, and logistics, which they say have made construction harder to automate than other industries.

TheJobWalk Thoughts

Gritt is retrofitting proven equipment instead of replacing it. Crews keep the machines they already know how to run and maintain, and that familiarity should shorten the path to getting a system approved on site.

Solar is the proving ground, not the ceiling. Gritt names data centers, bridges, and roads as future targets, and a clean safety record on panel placement gives that pitch some real weight going into other sectors.

For subs watching this space, the number worth tracking is efficiency, not price. Gritt has claimed efficiency gains without adding headcount. If that holds up across more deployments, it becomes a sourcing conversation worth having before a competitor brings it up first.
