The Daily Dig
GSK is investing more than $800 million to expand their campus in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Construction is planned to begin in 2027.
Governor Josh Shapiro and Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary Rick Siger announced the project on October 9, 2026. The state describes it as a biopharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing hub. It will combine commercial production, research and development, and advanced digital capabilities on one site.
Knock Down, Build Up
The scope covers demolition of existing buildings along with construction of new and enhanced facilities.
The centerpiece is a biologics manufacturing facility built at commercial scale. It’s designed to support both clinical and commercial supply.
An R&D pilot plant will be co-located with it to speed up tech transfer and process development. The scope also includes a centralized quality control lab paired with a manufacturing science and technology (MSAT) hub.
“Investing in additional commercial and R&D manufacturing with advanced digital capabilities at our Upper Merion site will help accelerate the development and supply of future medicines for patients,” said Regis Simard, President, GSK Global Supply Chain.
Repeat Customer
The expansion is expected to create more than 300 new jobs over the next 5 years. It should also help retain approximately 4,500 existing full-time jobs across the state.
GSK has been here before. In October 2024, they announced an $800 million expansion in Marietta, Lancaster County, which doubles that site’s size and capacity.
Between the two projects, GSK’s recent Pennsylvania investment comes to nearly $1.7 billion.

TheJobWalk Thoughts
No contractor was named in the announcement. With a 2027 start, preconstruction positioning should begin well before the shovels do. Facilities like this typically carry heavy process piping, HVAC, electrical, automation, and commissioning scopes. Long equipment lead times can shape the schedule too. Subs with GMP and validation experience will bring a stronger pitch.
In September 2025, GSK committed at least $30 billion to U.S. R&D and supply chain infrastructure over 5 years. Upper Merion looks like one piece of that spending. Firms that deliver here could be well placed as more of it reaches the street.
