Clearway Energy Group has closed financing and begun construction on 210 megawatts of new battery storage in Utah’s Beaver and Iron counties. The expansion of its Honeycomb Energy Center is backed by long-term contracts with PacifiCorp.
A four-bank consortium is financing the approximately $400 million energy center. Clearway says the new storage will help balance supply and demand on Utah’s grid.
Three new facilities will advance Honeycomb’s second phase, growing Clearway’s Utah storage fleet to seven systems.
Combined capacity: 2,120 megawatt-hours
The first four sites came online earlier this year
Each sits beside an operating Clearway solar site
Clearway partnered with Rosendin on construction, which will create at least 150 jobs.
The three new projects will also bring:
$37 million in additional tax revenue for Beaver and Iron counties during operations, pushing the Honeycomb total past $95 million
$60,000 more in yearly donations to Utah schools and community organizations, for $100,000 a year across all seven sites
Splitting the Pot
Do the subtraction and each phase wins a round. The new sites outgive the first four on donations ($60,000 to $40,000), while the first four still lead on taxes (more than $58 million to $37 million).
Four Down, Three to Go
The next milestone is commercial operations for the new sites. That’s when Clearway’s public affiliate, Clearway Energy, Inc., has agreed to invest.
