The Daily Dig

HITT Contracting and NASA have broken ground on the Applied Spaceflight Fabrication Facility at Johnson Space Center in Houston. HITT announced the groundbreaking on October 27, 2026. As general contractor, they will deliver a high-bay machine shop of approximately 37,625 square feet, designed to support component production for NASA’s spaceflight missions.

Under One High Bay

The project is also known as Building 70. It’s a greenfield build that brings machining equipment and operations from multiple campus buildings into one location.

Inside, teams will turn engineering designs into precision components that support mission hardware development.

The ASFF is only the beginning, serving as the first phase of a broader engineering complex planned to bring manufacturing, assembly, and laboratory capabilities closer together.

“Building for precision manufacturing starts with understanding how the space needs to perform,” said Todd Hudson, vice president at HITT Contracting.

HITT says they will coordinate closely with NASA to meet the project’s specialized equipment and operational requirements.

Seven Seats at the Table

Separately, HITT is one of seven firms selected for NASA’s Johnson Space Center Multiple Award Construction Contract.

That program supports up to $300 million in campus improvements. Its scope covers construction, revitalization, and infrastructure upgrades to mission support facilities, utilities, and equipment.

TheJobWalk Thoughts

Consolidation projects raise a question every GC has heard in a precon meeting: how does the owner keep working while everything moves? The release confirms the consolidation but doesn’t say how the transition will be handled. On jobs like this, coordinating with the owner on equipment and operations often matters as much as the building itself.

The ASFF is also the first piece of a planned engineering complex, though the release doesn’t say what comes next or when. For firms chasing NASA work in Houston, that makes this campus worth watching closely.
