The Daily Dig:
The Texas Department of Transportation has officially kicked off Phase 1 of the long planned U.S. 90 expansion in west Bexar County, handing Jordan Foster Construction the contract for the stretch between I-410 and Loop 1604. Phase 1 comes in at roughly $146 million according to TxDOT and is part of a larger $473 million effort to upgrade the corridor as traffic on San Antonio's west side keeps getting worse.
The project will turn U.S. 90 into a six-lane expressway with continuous frontage roads and bring a handful of interchange improvements, including a flyover ramp at Loop 1604 and a new roundabout at Ray Ellison Boulevard. Phase 2, which would extend from Loop 1604 out to SH 211, doesn't have full funding locked down yet. TxDOT says Phase 2 construction is looking at somewhere between 2028 and 2032, depending on whether the money comes through.
Project Snapshot:
Owner / Developer: Texas Department of Transportation
General Contractor: Jordan Foster Construction (Phase I)
Sector: Transportation / Highway
Value: $146M (Phase I estimate); $473M total program
Location: US-90, West Bexar County, San Antonio, TX
Timeline: Phase 1 underway; Phase 2 anticipated 2028-2032 (contingent)
TheJobWalk Thoughts:
This is classic TxDOT highway work, long haul, live traffic headaches, and phased rollouts that depend on whether Austin sends the check. Phase 1 gives civil and roadway crews some real backlog to chew on, but Phase 2? We'll believe it when we see the funding hit. If you're planning to bid this corridor, pack your patience and your traffic control plan, because you'll be dancing around commuters while the west side builds out around you. On the bright side, at least you'll have job security until your kids graduate high school.
