Kiewit Power Constructors has marked one year on site as EPC partner for the Homer City Energy Campus in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Homer City Generation calls it the largest natural gas-powered energy facility currently under construction in the U.S.
Kiewit has led demolition and construction across the 3,200-acre site. It has also built a workforce of more than 2,000 skilled tradespeople and contractors, with a majority hired from Pennsylvania.
Year One, By the Yard:
Vertical construction began in April 2026 with the first structure on campus.
Demolition and excavation wrapped in June 2026, ahead of schedule.
Crews recycled over 112,000 tons of scrap materials.
They excavated approximately 3 million cubic yards, roughly the volume of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Robotics were used in structural demolition to help ensure worker safety.
That’s a pyramid’s worth of dirt, and not one pharaoh on the payroll.
Iron Arrives: Kiewit recently oversaw installation of the first two heat recovery steam generators, which began arriving in September 2026. It also oversaw the setting of the first gas turbine on its foundation.
Safety at Scale: The project has logged zero OSHA recordable incidents to date, even as the workforce grew past 2,000. Shawn Steffee, business agent for Boilermakers Local 154, thanked Kiewit for running the job safely and efficiently, calling it a model the rest of the country can follow.
Off the Clock: In September, Kiewit and Homer City Generation raised $250,000 for three local charities at the Inaugural Kiewit Cares Charity Golf Tournament. Kiewit Project Director Brian Reinhart said the team has contributed nearly 1,000 volunteer hours and more than $275,000 to organizations across Indiana County.
Homer City Generation CEO Corey Hessen said the company looks forward to another year with Kiewit. With demolition done and the first turbine set, year two starts on a solid foundation.
