The Daily Dig

Lane Construction Corporation has been selected as the preferred team to design and build a $582 million modified phased design-build contract for Project 2 of FDOT's Moving I-4 Forward program, the largest infrastructure initiative currently underway in Florida.

The project covers a 3.1-mile stretch of I-4 in Osceola County, from east of County Road 532 to west of World Drive. Lane will reconstruct and widen that segment, adding two express lanes and four general-use lanes in each direction. The scope also includes reconfiguring the SR 429 interchange and building new ramps connecting I-4 to SR 538 Poinciana Parkway.

Additional work includes widening Old Lake Wilson Road from two to four lanes with sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides. The broader Moving I-4 Forward program adds express lane capacity along I-4 from west of U.S. 27 in Polk County to east of World Center Drive in Orange County, accelerating improvements 10 to 20 years ahead of prior schedules.

Lane has operated in Florida for more than three decades and is currently executing several other FDOT projects on the I-4 corridor, including interchanges at SR 33, SR 535, and Sand Lake Road, plus the I-275/I-4 project in Tampa. Last month, the company accelerated construction to open a third southbound lane on Florida's Turnpike/SR 91 in Minneola nearly three years ahead of schedule.

TheJobWalk Thoughts

A $582 million MPDB contract is a long runway of work. For subs and suppliers already on Lane's Florida roster, this is a conversation worth having now. MPDB procurement front-loads design decisions, which means subcontractor scope packages get defined earlier than traditional delivery. Don't wait for formal solicitation.

The SR 429 interchange reconfiguration and Poinciana Parkway ramp work will carry real complexity in MOT planning and phased traffic shifts. Experienced local subs with corridor familiarity have a measurable edge in that selection process.
