The Daily Dig

McCarthy Building Companies and Phelps Health have topped out the hospital’s Emergency Department addition and renovation in Rolla, Missouri. The project is a major step toward nearly doubling emergency care capacity for the region.

The two celebrated on September 22, 2026, when Phelps Health leadership spoke to a crowd about the community’s investment and the growing need for emergency care.

McCarthy’s steel team set a brisk pace on the frame. They erected roughly 616 tons of steel in less than three months.

“We’re incredibly proud of our crews for that achievement and inspired to see how deeply this community and Phelps Health leadership have embraced the project,” said McCarthy Senior Project Manager Tim Kehr.

With the frame finished, the team now turns to concrete slabs and the façade.

Room to Breathe

The new department will grow to 38,000 square feet, nearly double its current footprint. Plans include 32 treatment beds, observation rooms and larger behavioral health spaces.

The department will also add new onsite imaging services, including CT, radiology and ultrasound.

Saving Room

The project includes another 40,000 square feet of shell space. Phelps Health is reserving it for future customization as patient and staff needs evolve.

The Rolla main medical campus is the largest rural-serving hospital in south-central Missouri.

TheJobWalk Thoughts

Topping out a hospital is where the hard part starts. Healthcare interiors are typically packed with MEP, medical gas, nurse call and low voltage. CT and radiology rooms usually need shielding and close coordination with equipment vendors, so teams that lock submittals early tend to stay out of trouble.

The renovation half adds another layer. Hospital renovations generally call for careful phasing and infection control, because the work has to happen around patient care.

Then there’s the 40,000 square feet of shell space. Space like that typically gets built out later, which makes it a project worth tracking now.
