The Daily Dig
Moon Area School District broke ground on a major athletics construction program at Moon Area High School in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. Superintendent Jason D'Alesio was on hand for the ceremony, which kicked off what will be one of the larger K-12 athletic facility investments in the Pittsburgh region.
The centerpiece is a new 50,000 square foot indoor athletic center featuring a turf field, elevated walking track, weight room, simulator room, locker room, trainer room, board room with executive session space, and concessions stands.
The stadium press box is also getting a full renovation. The 5,700 square foot structure will be rebuilt to include a faculty development room, press area, announcer area, home and away coaches' rooms, and filming platforms. The 15,000 square foot field house will see locker room updates and new office space for coaches and officials.
Rounding out the scope are new turf baseball and softball fields, a multipurpose field, tennis court upgrades, and a related parking lot project. D'Alesio said the goal is to have the outdoor fields ready for play by fall 2026. The indoor facility and stadium renovations are estimated for completion in mid-August 2027. Teams that use the stadium will play home games at alternate sites during the 2026-27 school year.

TheJobWalk Thoughts
A program this size rarely goes out as a single contract. The scope spans a ground up building, a press box gut and rebuild, a field house renovation, multiple synthetic turf installs, site civil work, and a parking lot. Those typically get packaged separately, so procurement windows are staggered and a sub who misses one phase will likely have more opportunities behind it.
The funding split matters too. Bond proceeds carry the stadium work while capital reserves fund the turf fields. Capital reserve draws can run on tighter approval timelines and tend to be more sensitive to cost increases during buyout. Subs pricing the field scope should be asking early about contingency posture. K-12 athletic programs don't get the headlines, but in Pittsburgh's western suburbs, districts like Moon Area put steady mid-size work on the street year after year.
