New London Hospital in New London, New Hampshire, held a ceremonial groundbreaking on September 15, 2026, for a new Surgical Care Center. The hospital is a member of Dartmouth Health, and the center is expected to open in fall 2028.

The building will cover roughly 40,000 square feet across two levels at the rear of the hospital. Construction was already underway when the ceremony took place, so the event marked a milestone rather than a start date.

Walsh Brothers Construction is building the project. Linea 5 Architects is the architect.

Scrub In

The center will house four operating rooms and a post-anesthesia care unit with 22 beds. It also expands central sterile processing, the department that cleans and sterilizes surgical instruments.

The hospital’s two existing operating rooms will be converted into surgical procedure rooms.

Space is the driver here, with current ORs routinely running at or near 85% capacity. The new center is meant to add flexibility for emergency and add-on cases while allowing surgical services to grow.

“Our current surgical facilities have served us well for more than 30 years, but medicine has changed, our community has grown and the demand for surgical care has increased,” said Dr. Lauren G. Wirth, president and CEO of New London Hospital.

The project also adds a dedicated entrance for the center and improved waiting areas for patients and families. Updated spaces are designed to support privacy and make the building easier to navigate.

Karen L. Beinhaur, the hospital’s chief nursing officer, said the teams who provide care every day have helped plan the project since the very beginning.

Open for Business, Open for Surgery

Construction is being coordinated with current hospital operations. Surgical and endoscopy services are expected to continue throughout the build without interruption to patient care.

TheJobWalk Thoughts

The real spec here isn’t square footage, it’s building while surgery and endoscopy stay open. On occupied hospital jobs, infection control and phasing typically drive the schedule as much as the structure does. Subs with live hospital experience have a real edge.

Walsh Brothers Construction holds the contract, so that’s the door for subs and suppliers to knock on. With construction started by June 2026, early packages are likely bought out. Interior finishes and specialty OR and sterile processing systems typically buy out later in a schedule, so those trades may still have time to get in front of them.
