Google announced this week it's exploring a new data center project in Lea County, New Mexico. It would be the company's first self-built development in the state.
Location and facility specs are still under wraps. Google kept it vague on purpose: "Though many details remain outstanding, we're excited about the possibilities that exist in Lea County, and look forward to sharing more as the project progresses," the company said.
Where the Map Points: Lea County sits in the far southeast corner of New Mexico, right on the Texas border, with Lovington as the county seat. Google already runs projects next door in Arizona and Texas.
A Market Still Finding Its Footing: New Mexico's data center scene is small compared to Arizona and Texas, and most of what exists clusters around Albuquerque.

If this project moves forward, Lea County would put Google well outside that Albuquerque cluster and give the company its first foothold in a state where the map still has plenty of open space.
Nothing's locked in yet. No site, no size, no timeline.
Lovington's used to watching pump jacks work the horizon. Soon it might be watching server racks instead.
