Northwestern Medicine confirmed on August 17, 2026, that it is moving forward with a 150,000 square foot cancer institute in Orland Park. It is being described as one of the most significant healthcare investments the village has ever seen.
The St. George Cancer Hospital will be built on land between 15300 and 15400 West Ave., within the 153rd Street Corridor. Several Northwestern Medicine representatives attended the Village Board meeting to walk trustees through the plans and answer questions.
The project is expected to create more than 150 hospital jobs once it opens, along with roughly 350 construction jobs during the build. Trustee John Lawler called the project "huge for not just Orland Park but for the entire southwest region," adding that residents will gain access to a state of the art cancer center without having to travel into Chicago.
Trustee Cindy Nelson-Katsenes said the project will now enter its next phase, with architects, engineers and medical leaders continuing to shape the facility's design and scope. She said the hospital will give residents access to world class medical care close to home, care that previously meant a trip downtown.
Planned features include advanced oncology suites for immunotherapy, radiation therapy and precision based cancer treatments. The design also calls for family support spaces such as counseling rooms, quiet areas and caregiver resources, along with research collaboration hubs where clinicians and scientists can work together on new therapies.
Trustee Bill Healy said the hospital "could become a regional anchor for cancer care, offering services that previously required long drives or multiple appointments across different facilities." The facility will also include community wellness programming focused on prevention, early detection and long term survivorship.
Construction timelines have not yet been finalized. Early site preparation is expected to begin once regulatory reviews are complete. Northwestern Medicine is expected to release additional design renderings and construction schedules later this year.
