Skanska has signed a $271 million contract with NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic to replace Pier 1 at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island. The new homeport pier will serve U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters.

Work has begun, with completion anticipated in March 2030. That's about three and a half years after the October 2 announcement.

Half the Footprint, Built for Four:

  • Old Pier 1: about 100 by 1,580 feet

  • New pier: about 80 by 1,000 feet

  • Berths: four Offshore Patrol Cutters

The new pier covers roughly half the old one's footprint.

Keeping the Cutters Connected: New substations, water and wastewater connections, and a compressed air system will support the cutters while they're docked.

The contract also covers new bulkhead, dredging, site improvements and underground utilities, all at an active Navy installation.

Into the Order Book: The deal will count toward Skanska's U.S. order bookings for the third quarter of 2026.

Pier 1 is headed for demolition. Its replacement comes up 580 feet short on length but long on hookups.
