PPG is investing $70 million to expand its aerospace transparencies site in Huntsville, Alabama, the company announced October 7. The project is meant to help PPG meet growing demand for aircraft cockpit windows and passenger windows.
It’s part of a series of multiyear projects supporting PPG’s push to increase production capacity and grow its aerospace transparencies business.
According to PPG, demand for aerospace transparencies continues to grow across three markets:
Commercial aviation
Military aviation
General aviation
Francois Buehlmann, PPG’s general manager of global transparencies for Aerospace, said the expansion increases operational efficiency and provides room for future equipment investments.
Making Room on the Floor
The expansion includes a new building, but it won’t be used for manufacturing. Instead, PPG is moving support work out so the existing site gains manufacturing space:
PPG will lease and build out a new facility of 112,000 square feet
That building will house production support functions
The move frees up additional manufacturing space at the existing transparencies facility
In other words, support functions get their own building, and the existing facility gets more room to make windows.
Staying Power
PPG has operated its Huntsville transparencies facility for more than 55 years. Buehlmann said the expansion reinforces the company’s commitment to investing in Huntsville for the long run.
The release adds that the projects position the site for future growth. Translation: PPG isn’t going anywhere.
