$880M Medical Center Expansion
Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania has officially broken ground...
The Build:
Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania has officially broken ground on an $880 million expansion and modernization project that will add a major new tower and upgrade key hospital services as part of a broader effort to expand care capacity and improve patient experience. The project was publicly announced with a ceremonial groundbreaking in May 2025, attended by Geisinger officials and community leaders.
The centerpiece of the work is a new 11 story patient tower, designed to include a significantly expanded emergency department that will roughly double the existing ER square footage and increase staffed bed capacity from approximately 45 to 60. The tower will also support a transition to 100% private patient rooms for adult medical surgical units, modern operating suites, and updated intensive care units, responding to service demand trends across the region.
Alongside the patient tower, the project includes a multi level parking garage adjacent to the new structure and extensive campus modernization work. Site preparation is already underway, with foundation construction planned through the next construction season. The expanded facility is expected to open to patients by 2029, according to the project release.
The design and construction team includes EwingCole as architect and Whiting-Turner as general contractor, with PURE Project Management supporting project delivery coordination.
This expansion builds on Geisinger’s role as a major regional care provider. Geisinger Medical Center is the flagship hospital of Geisinger Health System, a nonprofit health network serving millions of patients in Pennsylvania.
