HGA and Case Western Reserve University announced on Oct. 22 that the Roger E. Susi Interdisciplinary Research Building is complete. The facility spans five stories and 189,000 square feet, and the announcement calls it CWRU’s largest campus development project in decades.
Faculty, researchers and students are expected to begin moving in this November.
Seven Research Areas, One Address:
Electrochemical engineering and energy science
Advanced materials and manufacturing
Precision diagnostics and therapeutics
Molecular therapeutics
Neurotechnology
Neurorobotics
Climate and ecosystem science
The labs are designed to adapt as technology, equipment, methods and research priorities change. Faculty surrogates from a range of research areas helped the design team anticipate how those needs could shift.
The Atrium Does the Networking
At the center, an atrium rising four stories connects two laboratory bars. It’s designed to bring researchers from different teams and floors together, while informal seating, lab views and natural light encourage them to gather.
In the courtyard, an “equation wall” designed by Pentagram will display scientific equations chosen by faculty, set in stainless steel forms that resemble tile. Call it a wall that shows its work.
HGA designed the building to target LEED Gold certification. Features include:
Rainwater capture tied to the university’s existing underground cistern for campus landscape irrigation
Bird safe glazing to help prevent bird strikes
Labs built for energy efficiency, plus sustainable materials
Indoor air testing before anyone moves in
Who’s on the Roster
HGA served as architect of record, structural engineer, interior designer and laboratory planner. Discovery Builders, a joint venture of Turner Construction, Next Generation Construction, The AKA Team and Adrian Maldonado & Associates, was also part of the project team.
The building is finished, but some of its art is still on the way, including a mosaic slated for installation at a later date.
