Skanska has signed a $163 million contract with the University of Mary Washington to build a new theater and renovate the school's fine arts buildings in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
The contract will count toward Skanska's US order bookings for the third quarter of 2026. For anyone keeping score in kronor, the release puts it at about SEK 1.5 billion.
Setting the Stage:
Site development and infrastructure
Core and shell, plus interior fittings
A multistory theater of approximately 68,230 square feet
A performance hall with 293 seats
This is an entirely new building, not a coat of paint and some fresh house seats.
The Wings Get Work, Too:
82,000 square feet of renovations to the existing fine arts buildings
An addition of 8,950 square feet
The renovation work alone accounts for more square footage than the new theater. Together, the three pieces add up to roughly 159,000 square feet.
Rehearsal Schedule: Work has already begun, and construction and renovations are expected to wrap up in February 2030. That leaves a little over three years between the announcement and the expected finish.
The completion date is on the calendar, so now it's up to the crews to hit their marks.
