Madison Energy Infrastructure just announced a plan to build another 1 gigawatt of distributed solar and storage capacity by 2028, backed by up to $2 billion in capital.
The goal is helping meet AI's exploding power demand without waiting on the grid to catch up.
Called the Community Infrastructure initiative, the plan pairs local solar and storage projects alongside the large scale generation still doing the heavy lifting. Madison's already got the track record to back it up.
The company has developed more than 600 projects across 30 plus states. Its operating portfolio is expected to cross 1 GW this fall, meaning this initiative would double the company's footprint in just two years.
Recent and in progress projects include:
50 MW of energy storage with CORE Electric Cooperative in Colorado
13 MW solar plus 8.75 MW storage for the City of Niles, Michigan, at Jerry Tyler Memorial Airport
16 MW solar under construction at Denver International Airport
27 MW offsite solar nearing completion in Pennsylvania, hedging against rising PJM electricity prices
Madison is also growing its partnership with data center developer EdgeConneX, pairing clean power with new digital infrastructure builds.
CEO Richard Walsh framed the initiative as helping "AI labs and hyperscalers show up for communities, not just in them." EQT backs both Madison and EdgeConneX, and its own infrastructure lead called that pairing a "unique vantage point" on the whole buildout. Power and data, same investor, same play.
