The State Group has acquired MelKay, an Evansville, Indiana based MEP contractor, according to a September 8 announcement. MelKay brings over 400 union tradesmen covering electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, fire, security, communication and safety systems.
The company serves southern Indiana, western Kentucky and southern Illinois, and holds preferred vendor status with a serious client list:

MelKay didn't start that way. The company was founded in 1951 in the back office of a hotel and restaurant owned by the founder's in-laws. Over 75 years later, it's a multi-state operation with union labor behind every job.
Family Business, New Chapter: MelKay CEO Scott Hartig, whose grandfather started the company, said selling a business that's stayed in his family for three generations wasn't an easy call. But he pointed to the strength of the incoming leadership and the opportunities ahead with The State Group as reasons for confidence in what comes next.
The State Group is headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, and is backed by funds managed by Apollo.
The firm logs over eight million man-hours a year across power generation, automotive, datacenter, oil and gas, transportation and other industries, with offices across the U.S. and Canada.
Executive Chairman Michael Lampert cited shared values around service quality, teamwork and customer focus as the fit that made the deal make sense.
A company started in a hotel back office just became part of an operation logging eight million man-hours a year. Not bad for 75 years of work.
