The Daily Dig

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission announced on October 23, 2026, that the final steel beam is in place on the new Wichita Falls State Hospital. The $452 million replacement facility will provide inpatient psychiatric care and is expected to be complete in late 2027.

The hospital will hold 225 beds across 411,505 square feet, serving both adults and children.

Plans call for therapeutic spaces, including outdoor areas and natural light throughout the building, designed to promote recovery.

Beds, Not Beams

Gov. Greg Abbott called the milestone “a proud step forward in our mission to expand high-quality behavioral health care for Texans.” He also noted that Texas has invested more than $2.5 billion to modernize state facilities since 2017.

HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth kept the focus on patients: “The new Wichita Falls State Hospital will strengthen inpatient mental health care for patients, families and communities across the region.”

The Wichita Falls State Hospital campus dates back to 1922, when it opened after the 35th Texas Legislature authorized a psychiatric facility for the area.

Lone Star Lineup

Wichita Falls is one piece of a larger push. HHSC also has new state hospitals underway in Lubbock and Amarillo, along with a replacement hospital in Terrell.

Work is also moving on an expansion of the Rio Grande State Center in Harlingen and renovations at the San Antonio State Hospital.

TheJobWalk Thoughts

With the steel topped out, the work shifts toward enclosure, MEP, and interiors. On psychiatric facilities, that is typically where the specialty scope lives, including anti-ligature hardware, security glazing, and secure doors. Those packages often carry long lead times, and late 2027 isn’t far off for a building this size.

The pipeline matters more than any single job. HHSC has five other hospital and treatment center projects underway across Texas. Suppliers and specialty subs who sell into behavioral health should be tracking every one of them.
