The Trades Behind the AI Boom

Unsplash

As reported by CNBC, the AI data center boom is generating an unexpected surge in demand for skilled trade workers. With the four major hyperscalers, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon, committing nearly $700 billion in combined capital expenditure this year, the physical infrastructure required is immense.

Randstad CEO, Sander van't Noordende warned that the real constraint on global tech growth is not chips or capital, but the scarcity of specialized talent to build it.

Between 2022 and 2026, job postings for robotic technicians grew 107%, HVAC Engineers 67%, and Industrial Automation Technicians 51%. Specialized professionals moving into data center roles typically see a 25 to 30 percent pay increase, with six-figure salaries increasingly within reach.

The challenge ahead is significant. The U.S. faces a potential shortfall of 1.9 million manufacturing workers by 2033, pushing companies toward apprenticeship programs, community college partnerships, and veteran pipelines to grow their own talent.

Ciel Dubai Marina, UAE

Ciel Dubai Marina opened in November 2025 as the world's tallest hotel, certified by Guinness World Records.

Developed by The First Group and designed by NORR Group, the 82-story tower rises 377 metres above Dubai Marina at a construction cost of approximately $544 million, operating under IHG's Vignette Collection brand.

Construction began in November 2016 with China Railway 18th Bureau Group as main contractor and Zetas Zamin Teknolojisi handling foundation works.

The substructure consumed more than 11,800 cubic metres of concrete and over 3,000 tonnes of steel, with the superstructure built around a reinforced concrete core with perimeter columns and outriggers.

The tower houses 1,004 rooms and suites, eight dining venues, a luxury spa on the 61st floor, and a rooftop infinity pool on the 76th floor. A 300-metre-tall internal atrium with vertically stacked sky gardens runs the full height of the building.

Turning Sawdust Into Fire-Resistant Materials

Unsplash: ETH Zurich

Researchers at ETH Zurich and Empa have developed a fireproof building material made from sawdust and struvite, a crystalline ammonium magnesium phosphate mineral.

The composite offers a greener alternative to conventional cement-bonded particleboards, which carry a heavy carbon footprint due to energy-intensive cement production. The new board contains just 40 percent binder compared to 60-70 percent cement in traditional panels, making it significantly lighter.

The material's fire resistance is its standout feature. While untreated spruce ignites in roughly 15 seconds, the struvite-sawdust composite takes more than three times longer. When heated, struvite releases water vapor and ammonia, drawing heat away from the material and displacing air to slow fire spread.

Recyclability sets it further apart, after demolition the board can be mechanically broken down and heated to recover its components for reuse, a meaningful contribution to the circular economy.
