NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy Merge to Form World's Largest Electric Utility Business

NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy announced on May 18 they've agreed to combine in an all-stock transaction, creating the world's largest regulated electric utility business by market capitalization.

Dominion shareholders will receive 0.8138 NextEra shares per share held, with NextEra shareholders owning roughly 74.5% of the combined company at close.

The combined entity will serve approximately 10 million customer accounts across Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Backed by 110 gigawatts of generation capacity and a $138 billion rate base projected to grow around 11% annually through 2032, more than 80% of the business will be regulated.

The company will rank No. 1 globally in renewables and battery storage and No. 1 in total U.S. generation, with 130-plus gigawatts of large-load opportunities in the pipeline.

John Ketchum will serve as chairman and CEO under the NextEra Energy name, with Robert Blue as president and CEO of regulated utilities. Closing is expected within 12 to 18 months, pending shareholder and regulatory approvals.

BUILD OF THE WEEK

MDTA Splits Key Bridge Rebuild Into Four Contracts

The Maryland Transportation Authority announced on May 19 that the Francis Scott Key Bridge reconstruction will be split into four separate contracts, with a combined estimated cost of between $4 to 4.8 billion. MDTA cited expanded competition, faster contract awards, and broader local workforce opportunity as the driving factors.

The largest package is the main span design-build contract, estimated between $3.5 billion and $4 billion, calling for a cable-stayed bridge with a 1,665-foot main span and 230 feet of minimum clearance over the federal channel. Construction is anticipated to begin summer 2027.

The two land approach contracts are design-bid-build. The south approach is estimated at $300 million to $400 million, with construction anticipated to begin spring 2027. The north approach, estimated at $200 million to $300 million, is anticipated to begin spring 2028.

The demolition and marine work package, estimated at $50 million to $100 million, is the first to market, with bids opening this summer and construction anticipated to begin fall 2026.

Alatau Iconic Complex, Kazakhstan

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill revealed plans in March for the Alatau Iconic Complex and Gateway District, a pair of towers serving as the centrepiece of Alatau City, a new city being developed along the Almaty-Qonaev highway in Kazakhstan.

The design features two wedge-shaped towers drawing inspiration from the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain range. The taller rises to 272 metres, becoming the tallest building in southern Kazakhstan, while the second stands 80 metres housing a luxury hotel and residences.

The 276,800 square metre mixed-use complex will include offices, residences, a hotel, retail, and cultural venues across both towers and a connecting podium at the base.

The Gateway District is planned as a walkable, transit-oriented neighbourhood with express rail, light rail, and public plazas, with Alatau City's masterplan extending through 2050.

Early construction has already begun, with the complex intended to establish Alatau's central business district.

PCG Deploys Track3D Across $413M in Active Projects

Performance Contracting Group, the largest drywall and ceiling contractor in the United States, has entered a multi-year enterprise agreement with Track3D to deploy its Reality Intelligence platform across the company's operations.

PCG executes approximately 12,000 projects annually, with Track3D currently tracking $413 million in active project value.

The platform monitors 65 unique drywall and ceiling elements mapped directly to PCG's internal cost codes, tracking framing, hanging, and taping as distinct categories with their own labor profiles and billing implications.

Before Track3D, two team members spent two to three days every week manually compiling progress updates. The platform now eliminates up to 48 hours of manual reporting per week.

Track3D built to PCG's operational model rather than the other way around, developing trade-specific dashboards mapped to PCG's cost codes, a level of granularity CFO Brett Dahmer said legacy platforms couldn't handle.

The deal follows Track3D's previously announced partnership with Hensel Phelps, with active engagements underway across several major mechanical, electrical, and concrete contractors in North America.

In other words: ā€œGood luck, boys.ā€
