The National Park Service has awarded a $69.5 million contract to Perini Management Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Tutor Perini Corporation. The scope covers rehabilitation of water and wastewater treatment systems at Death Valley National Park. Work will take place in the Furnace Creek and Cow Creek areas, the park's two primary developed zones. These areas serve 1.7 million annual visitors, 1,100 residents, and the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe.

Wastewater improvements include replacing sewer gravity and force mains, service laterals, and pump stations. On the water side, crews will build an extensive new distribution system, including water mains, laterals, pumps, and appurtenances. The project also calls for developing new potable water wells. Crews will reconstruct the reverse osmosis treatment building, the chlorination building, and the associated control systems.

The scope includes repairs and upgrades to increase the capacity of an existing lagoon. Work is expected to begin in the fall of 2026, with substantial completion anticipated in early 2029.

Once complete, the project is expected to eliminate a significant amount of deferred maintenance on the park's utility systems. Tutor Perini says it will also improve system capacity, reliability, and resilience. The company points to public health and environmental protection as additional outcomes for park visitors, residents, employees, and partners. The $69.5 million contract value will be added to Tutor Perini's backlog in the third quarter of 2026.

This is a federal park contract, which puts it outside the usual deal flow most GCs track on the private commercial and residential side. For specialty utility subs, well drillers, and water treatment equipment suppliers, it is still a meaningful piece of backlog worth knowing about.

The reverse osmosis and chlorination building reconstruction is the part of this scope that carries the most technical weight. Process infrastructure like that calls for trade partners with specific water treatment experience, not general utility crews. Firms with that background should treat this as a project worth tracking as it moves from award into construction.

The award to substantial completion window runs from fall 2026 to early 2029, roughly two and a quarter to two and a half years depending on exact start date. That timeline reflects the reality of rehabilitating live utility infrastructure at an occupied national park, where sequencing has to account for continuous visitor and resident demand rather than a clean shutdown and rebuild.
