The Daily Dig

Vertiv has completed their approximately $1.45 billion acquisition of UtilityInnovation Group (UIG), paid in upfront cash. UIG is a Raleigh, North Carolina company that specializes in microgrids and behind the meter power for data centers. Vertiv announced the closing on October 27, 2026.

The total price could rise considerably from there. The deal includes up to $1.15 billion in additional cash if UIG hits EBITDA targets over periods of 12 and 24 months.

Power Moves

UIG brings microgrid controls, customized microgrid switchgear, energy storage, and proprietary controls software to the table. Their team also orchestrates onsite generation and designs behind the meter power architecture.

The deal extends Vertiv upstream to the grid interconnect. According to Vertiv, the goal is to help data center operators ease or eliminate their dependence on utility interconnection timelines. Anyone who has sat in an interconnection queue will understand the appeal.

“As AI data center operators work to accelerate deployment in an increasingly power-constrained environment, access to power has become a critical competitive advantage,” said Vertiv CEO Giordano Albertazzi.

Grid to Chip

Vertiv says customers will get a single accountable relationship from the grid interconnect through rack level infrastructure. They also say the offering is independent of any single generation technology or supplier.

UIG runs manufacturing operations in North Carolina and New Jersey.

“As part of Vertiv, we will be able to bring our microgrid and behind-the-meter power expertise to a broader set of customers globally,” said Sidney Hinton, Founder and CEO of UIG.

TheJobWalk Thoughts

Electrical subs should read “single accountable relationship” closely. When one vendor offers power from the grid interconnect to the rack, more of the switchgear, storage, and controls scope may arrive bundled and engineered in advance. That can mean steady install work but a thinner share of the design and procurement margin.

The earnout says something too. With up to $1.15 billion riding on EBITDA targets over 12 and 24 month periods, expect a hard push to grow UIG’s business. GCs chasing data center projects should find out early who owns the power package, because that vendor will have real say over the schedule.
