The Daily Dig
Houston-based Vortex Companies has acquired Municipal Pipe Tool Company LLC, a trenchless rehabilitation contractor headquartered in Hudson, Iowa. The deal extends Vortex's reach across a six-state Midwest corridor covering Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
MPT has been in the sewer maintenance and rehabilitation business since 1967, growing from a supplier of sewer components and cleaning services into a full trenchless rehab contractor. The company has a longstanding relationship with Vortex through CIPP Corp., a Vortex-owned company and one of North America's largest CIPP installation networks, which made this acquisition a logical next step for both sides.
Mark Kaler, who acquired MPT from its original founders and has led the business since, will stay on along with the rest of the operations team. Kaler noted that management continuity was central to making the transition work, and both companies described the deal as a natural extension of a relationship already built on shared work and shared standards.
Vortex CEO Mike Vellano and COO Ryan Graham both pointed to MPT's regional relationships and execution track record as the primary draw. The acquisition fits a broader pattern of Vortex building out its geographic footprint in markets where demand for trenchless infrastructure rehabilitation continues to grow.

TheJobWalk Thoughts
MPT was already connected to Vortex through CIPP Corp. before this deal closed, with an established working relationship and shared history at the network level. That shared history gives both sides a more straightforward path forward than a cold acquisition typically allows.
Kaler staying on matters for a clear reason. MPT has spent nearly six decades serving municipal and industrial clients, with customer partnerships across the six-state Midwest corridor. Those relationships are tied to the people who showed up and delivered. Continuity at the leadership level gives existing customers a reason to stay confident through the transition.
For suppliers and service providers working across the Midwest, Vortex is actively expanding its footprint in your market. If you do not already have a relationship with them, this is a reasonable time to build one.
